Antonia Maria Alonso, Latin & Spanish Teacher, PS duPont

Known as "Toni" by her dear friends, was born in Havana, Cuba in 1936.

She was the youngest daughter of Maria Teresa Carluch and Mario Castro Chané. Antonia fled from her beloved Cuba as a political refugee in 1962 with her husband and two month old daughter, leaving behind her country and so many family members that she missed each day in exile. Having arrived in Miami, Florida in 1962, Antonia and her family permanently settled in Wilmington when she received a position as a Latin and Spanish teacher at PS du Pont High School. Later she went on to become a visiting teacher and a passionate advocate for the Hispanic community and its children. She also served as a Spanish translator for the family court system. Antonia's life was devoted to raising her three daughters and instilling in them the deep love and respect she had for her Cuban culture, its language and traditions. She also gifted so many who entered her life with her never-ending maternal love, humor and generosity.

Antonia is survived by her husband of 47 years, Arturo Alonso; her daughters, Dr. Maria Alonso, Mercedes Alonso and Caridad Alonso; her son-in-laws, Dr. Terry Horton and Thomas Del Porte; her 5 grandchildren whom she adored, Sofia, Marité, Mercedes, Sevastian and Carluccio; her sister, Maria Teresa Polo and brother, José Castro also survive her.

There will be a gathering of remembrance and celebration of Antonia's life at 10 am, on Saturday May 31, at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 1010 West 4th Street.

In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial contribution to your favorite children's charity.

Appalled by Delaware's segregated system for collecting school taxes, Pierre S. du Pont spent more than $6 million to build African-American schools, which dramatically improved the conditions under which children were taught.

School Construction Update

P.S. duPont

The renovation of P.S. duPont  is on time and on budget. The renovated school is scheduled to be re-opened in August of 2008.  Construction work is currently in the second of four phases.  The building is currently a "hard hat" area with all staff having been vacated during July.  Administrative staff are now housed at the Burnett School where renovations are underway to prepare for the opening of the school year.  Renovations at Burnett include the replacement of the air conditioning chiller as well as waterproofing of the building and painting of the exterior walls.

To see pictures of the inside renovation, please click on the Yearbooks page and see the "Inside Scoop" you can either view the photos individually or watch them as a slide show. I was happy to hear they removed all the chairs in the auditorium to restore them back to their original condition.

Update!!! I received a call from the district and the Project Manager Stanley R. Krok, Bancroft Construction that the wall is not coming down...9/17/2007
Update!!!  4/19/2008 The wall did not come down but they have placed all the duct work in front of it so it can't be seen...
I guess that's better then if they painted it or tore it down. I will have
photos soon.
Save The Wall Campaign

Join us to help save the wall at PS behind the stage.
There are tons of names and of course a big heart with Rose and Phil, that Phil put up there in 1970, and on the other side are names going back to 1936. Bancroft Construction has won the bid to give PS a facelift which includes new windows, heating and plumbing, all new seats for the auditorium and a total restoration of the stage, so we are afraid they will just paint the walls as if they were just graffiti...Please write to the editor of the News Journal and also Bancroft Construction and help us out...

Old Wilmington: The way we were

Jennifer Marie Miller
CR:Brandywine

 By Jennifer Marie Miller

Special to The News Journal

The nostalgia of 1950s Wilmington can be difficult to really capture in history books or state-run Web sites. Sure, there are the hard facts of when stores opened and closed and when neighborhoods were built. But what about intimate details, about the old pony photographer and Mr. Peanut?

How about the old Leonetti's Bakery on Union Street? Name some businesses that once were in Wilmington and then moved to the suburbs. And how many times did the Wilmington Dry Goods Co. on Market Street play the national anthem?

Anyone who lived in Wilmington from 1935 to 1975 will remember the sights and sounds highlighted on the Web site oldwilmington.net. It contains more than 350 photos of the city from the middle decades of the 20th century, as well as sound bites from radio during that time.

Perryville, Md., residents Harry and Betty Rogerson created and now operate the site. Both were born and raised in Wilmington. Betty, 61, grew up in Browntown, graduated from Padua Academy in 1961 and currently works at Astra Zeneca. Harry, 63, lived in "The Flats" until he was 10, attended Conrad High School and is retired from the DuPont Co.

"We still are in Wilmington almost every day," Harry said. "Our family and friends are in Wilmington, we shop in Wilmington, and our roots are here."

The idea of the Web site came to Harry when he was at a reunion in 1999.

"The idea for this Web site came about following a reunion held for ÔThe Flats' neighborhood residents," he said. Prior to the reunion, Harry had made a personal Web site and filled it with pictures of his wife's teddy bear collection.

"Then I attended the reunion. During that gathering, residents from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s reminisced of those times, discussing stores, businesses, food and other nostalgia related to Wilmington," he said.

Shortly thereafter, Harry gathered old pictures of Wilmington during those times and scanned them into the computer. Then, he researched the residents of "The Flats" during the years and posted them on the teddy bear site. And on June 25, 1999, the site transitioned from teddy bears to pictures of old Delaware Coach buses, Wilmington churches and other items.

"I first chose the domain names oldwilmington.net and oldwilmington.com," Harry said. "I decided to go with the .net site so visitors could Ônetwork' with each other. The site has become a meeting place for old and new friends and the nostalgic memories from 1935 to 1975 that have been mentioned have triggered more nostalgic memories."

The site contains a guest book where visitors can sign in and ask questions. About 30 to 50 people sign on each day. There is also a forum to continue discussions on specific topics. Harry said he is getting ready to launch a chat room that will be available in the next few months.

Pictures come from the Rogersons' private collection, online visitors, friends and other Web sites. Harry said some people are hesitant to share their personal photos, but he can crop individuals out of pictures if they choose. Harry said he visits the Wilmington libraries and the Delaware Historical Society frequently and researches a lot of historic information; his site lists about 40 categories. Betty types in the information and lists all the known bakeries, churches, schools, doctors, food markets, etc.

"We get a lot of visitors from word of mouth," Betty said. "Other people find out about the site from search engines. We've had people from California and Italy visit the site. All of them have fun reminiscing about things."

Hockessin resident Christine Kaczmarczyk said she learned about the site from a person on www.classmates.com. Kaczmarczyk grew up at Second and Van Buren streets and graduated from Wilmington High School in 1957.

"It's incredible how much information there is," she said. "I like to look back. Oldwilmington.net lists the old Armory dances on Sunday nights. We used to live there. And the old Blue Rocks on Governor Printz Boulevard - we used to look through the fence. It really brings back fond memories."

Bear resident Pat Mahaney said he and his father looked up the site to find old businesses from Market and King streets. "My dad grew up in Forty Acres. He went to the old Sallies [Salesianium School]. And he used to work at the old bowling alley on Eighth Street. He was a pin-setter."

"It's like attending a high school reunion everyday. Harry enjoys it. He needed something to fill his retirement time up," Betty joked.

"University of Delaware has a site, the state has a Web site, but none of them are really into nostalgic things and zero in on a specific time like I do," Harry said. "This was a time of Wilmington's greatness - when it was growing and had taverns and bakeries on every street and music was unsurpassed."

"When we visited Europe, places were still like that, particularly Germany," Betty said.

Harry admits that he learns new things from the Web site. "People are always e-mailing me saying ÔHey, you forgot my doctor or before a restaurant was called that, it was originally this."

He added, "My goal is to let the site keep growing and have more and more visitors learn and reminisce about the way things were."
