This Day in History

Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica Published
Newton's Principia represents one of the greatest milestones in the history of science. The three-volume work includes Newton's three famous laws of motion, treatises on dynamics and fluid motion, and an explanation of Kepler's laws of planetary motion. It dominated the scientific view of the physical universe for three centuries after its publication. Although Newton used calculus to derive his results, he explained them by use of older geometric methods. Why might he have done this?

West Point Opens
West Point, New York, was the site of a military post established by George Washington in 1778. In 1802, Thomas Jefferson signed legislation establishing the United States Military Academy there. Initially, civil engineering was the foundation of the Academy's curriculum, which broadened after the Civil War. After WWI, Douglas MacArthur pushed for major changes in the physical fitness and athletic programs. What collegiate tradition began at West Point?

Capet, son of Hugh the Great, was king of France from 987 to 996. He was the first of the Capetians, the royal house that ruled France until 1328. After the death of the Carolingian king of France, the nobles and prelates elected him king, setting aside the Carolingian claimant, Charles I of Lower Lorraine. He later became involved in a controversy with the papacy over the deposition of the Carolingian archbishop of Reims. Today, the Capetian dynasty is head of state in what country?

Aries (3/21-4/19)
For Friday, July 4 - You might get annoyed, today, by someone who just can't get to the point! They will be hemming and hawing, flattering and fawning, then cracking jokes. Why? Because they are too afraid to spit it out! It looks like if you want to get to the truth about what they think or what they want, you need to come right out and ask them point blank. They might be surprised by your boldness, but they will probably be relieved that you are ready to hear what they have to say.

Taurus (4/20-5/20)
For Friday, July 4 - Keep an eye on your temper today, and don't let it get the best of you when someone gets rude or inconsiderate. It isn't going to help things if you chew someone out, and you will only end up looking self-righteous. So be mindful of your role in every conversation, and try to be a force for mutual respect -- not competition. You will have to take the high road today. There will be another day for you to get down and dirty and get things off your chest.

Gemini (5/21-6/21)
For Friday, July 4 - Try to be a lot more opinionated, today. You have so much to gain by speaking out and saying the right thing at the right time! So if you have a question during the middle of a long meeting, go ahead and ask it. Don't worry how it will sound. Chances are, you'll be asking something that everyone else in the room wants to know, too. It's true that stepping out in front of the crowd leaves you a bit vulnerable. But it also puts you in a leadership position.

Cancer (6/22-7/22)
For Friday, July 4 - Your recent victory might make you feel like showing off a little bit today, and that's okay. Just try to avoid doing it in front of people who it might rub the wrong way. It's important to be sensitive about people who haven't had as much success as you've had, and it's easy enough to keep from rubbing your win in their face. Being considerate of others isn't always convenient, but it is always appreciated. Make your reputation shine even brighter.

Leo (7/23-8/22)
For Friday, July 4 - A confidence boost will not only do wonders for your reputation, it will also help you in the health department -- because when you feel good about yourself, you start feeling better in your body. And the best way to get the boost you need today is either to check a few things off your 'to do' list or to meet a challenge you've been avoiding head on. Accomplishments will remind you how capable and responsible you are. Go to bed tonight knowing you got stuff done!

Virgo (8/23-9/22)
For Friday, July 4 - It's good that you want to be organized, but you also need to let some things in your life fall to chance. If you have too much control over every aspect of your life, there will be no unpredictability -- and no fun! So today, give up some control and let things happen without your intervention. Pass the reins over to someone whose ideas are just the ticket to liven up your social circle or work team. You will experience something new, and give a friend a chance to shine!

Libra (9/23-10/22)
For Friday, July 4 - You can't help but get more in touch with your inner artist today -- unusual colors and interesting images will catch your eye and get your creative juices flowing! Try to set aside some time to get out your ideas later in the day, when things have quieted down a bit. Write a poem or a short story. Doodle on some scratch paper. Perform a sweet song on someone's voice mail. Share crayon time with your favorite child. Do whatever you can to get your thoughts out into the world.

Scorpio (10/23-11/21)
For Friday, July 4 - The flattery you receive today is going to be completely genuine, so why doubt it? Sometimes you have to hang up your skepticism and just accept what people say as being what they mean -- especially when they are telling you how fabulous you are! Take each compliment you get and thank the giver for it -- that will add even more to your already glowing reputation. Your ego could use a growth spurt right now, so why not let it have it? Soak up the love you'll be getting with gusto!

Sagittarius (11/22-12/21)
For Friday, July 4 - Risk is not something that you should be afraid of -- especially right now, when there is an exciting opportunity just beyond your grasp. You have to go climbing out on that limb to get it! If you take away a little more security from your life, you will be led down a very exciting path. It might be scary at first, but it will also be exhilarating. There are so many reasons to think positively and be confident about the next few months of your life!

Capricorn (12/22-1/19)
For Friday, July 4 - On days like today, when you'll have to fight for some attention, you just have to walk right up to the people you want to talk to and make them hear you. It is time for you to get more aggressive if you want to get anywhere. Whether you want to start a flirtation, score some face time with the boss, or just get a waitress's attention at a restaurant, you'll have to be the proactive party. Don't be rude -- but do be forceful. You're smart enough to know the difference.

Aquarius (1/20-2/18)
For Friday, July 4 - Your independence is important, but going your own way isn't always the best way to get somewhere in life. Sometimes it's much wiser to let yourself be led along by others -- as long as they are going in the right direction. When you are in a group, you have a support system -- and at least one other set of eyes to help you stay focused on the goal. So today, opt for a team environment whenever you can. Collaboration will not only be helpful, it will be fun.

Pisces (2/19-3/20)
For Friday, July 4 - You are in total control today -- your practical side is out in full force, helping you avoid temptation and stick to your diet! You're making real progress on a few goals, and you should be feeling a lot more spry than usual. There's a real momentum taking you through the day today, and don't be surprised if it feels like the clock is on fast-forward. Time might get away from you, but it shouldn't cause you any problems. It's a day to drift along and be mellow.

A native's guide to San Jose
A century ago, what's now Silicon Valley, California, was called the Valley of Heart's Delight because of the region's mineral-rich soil and temperate climate (San Jose gets 300 days of sunshine a year). By the time I left for college in 1997, however, most of the cherry orchards had been gobbled up by office complexes. San Jose was in the hopeful early stages of the Internet boom, and although I didn't have an e-mail account yet, the technological advances that would change the world were already making their mark on my hometown.
